17 January - Embody

17 January, 2021

Emmanuel’s purpose is to grow disciples who exalt, explore, embody and engage. Through January we are going re-visit Emmanuel’s purpose

EMBODY

As disciples we are called to live out (embody) our faith where we are. At home, at work or school at church and in our community. Embody is about using our spiritual gifts to serve the communities in which we live seeking to grow the Kingdom of God.

READ

1 Peter 4:8-11

Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

DISCUSS

1. How has your week been? How have you seen God at work in your life?

2. Read the passage again. What are the key words and phrases?

3. What does this passage tell us about God?

4. What does this passage tell me about my relationship with others?

5. What is there in this passage that I want to apply to my own life?

Be prepared to share this with someone and report back on how it has gone.

PRAY

Dear Lord thank you for your gift of grace for me and setting me free. Help me to live a life that more fully reflects living as a follower and disciple of yours. Each day may I find ways to exalt you and may my life reflect my love. May I earnestly read and explore your word and apply it to my life. Help me to live a life that embodies what I believe. That what I say and what I do resonate and ring true. Lord help me to be committed to your mission, to make disciples and to earnestly pray and commit to sharing your love and grace with those I love who do not know you. I ask these things in the name of Jesus Christ who is my Saviour and Lord.

3 January - Exalt

3 January, 2021

Emmanuel’s purpose is to grow disciples who exalt, explore, embody and engage. Through January we are going re-visit Emmanuel’s purpose

EXALT

The word exalt means to praise highly or to glorify. When Jesus was asked what was the greatest commandment, he responded You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment.’ In exalting God, we acknowledge his greatness and our place before him. In worship we surrender ourselves to God, praise his name and experience the transformation of the Holy Spirit. It is important to think about how we exalt God throughout the week and not just on Sundays

Matthew 22:36-40

DISCUSS

1. How has your week been? How have you seen God at work in your life?

2. What do you understand by exalting God?

3. When and how do you exalt God?

4. In Thessalonians Paul speaks of a life worthy of God. (1 Thess 2:12). How is your life worthy of God or reflect God’s kingdom?

5. Try and find the time to praise and exalt God every day this week.

2 Kings 6:8-23 Elisha and the Arameans

Hebrews 12:1-3

Here’s what happens. The national scene in Israel has drastically changed since last week, the stormy days of Elijah’s confrontation with King Ahab and Queen Jezebel and the prophets of Baal. Elisha is now respected by King Jehoram and te Israelites are back following God. They are now defending themselves against the neighbouring tribes, in this case the Arameans. God gives Elisha the battle plans for Israel’s enemies, the Arameans. Finally, the king of Aram is fed up with losing and sends an army to surround Elisha and his servant. But Elisha sees a more powerful army of God’s angels, not visible to most. God opens Elisha’s servant’s eyes to see the angel army.

Memory Verse “No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39).

5. What do you need prayer and support for in the coming week?

6. Who do you need to pray and support this week?

7. be prepared to share some of these questions next week about what God has done.

PRAY

Let us pray

Loving God we are so blessed to be a part of your kingdom. We are ever aware of our need for your constant love and care. As we journey through this week Lord hep us to be aware of the challenges before us and the spiritual battles that we engage in. Do not let us be overwhelmed but rather as we see and respond in faith to hear the support of that great cloud of witnesses that sit in our corner cheering on our behalf. Give us the strength and perseverance for our daily battles and help us to support others in similar need. In Jesus name we pray

AMEN.

God of all blessings,

source of all life, giver of all grace:

We thank you for the gift of life:

for the breath that sustains life,

for the food of this earth that nurtures life,

for the love of family and friends

without which there would be no life.

We thank you for the mystery of creation:

for the beauty that the eye can see,

for the joy that the ear may hear,

for the unknown that we cannot behold filling the universe with wonder,

for the expanse of space that draws us beyond the definitions of our selves.

We thank you for setting us in communities:

for families who nurture our becoming,

for friends who love us by choice,

for companions at work, who share our burdens and daily tasks,

for strangers who welcome us into their midst,

for people from other lands who call us to grow in understanding,

for children who lighten our moments with delight,

for the unborn, who offer us hope for the future.

We thank you for this day: for life and one more day to love,

for opportunity and one more day to work for justice and peace,

for neighbours and one more person to love and by whom be loved,

for your grace and one more experience of your presence,

for your promise: to be with us, to be our God, and to give salvation.

For these, and all blessings,

we give you thanks, eternal, loving God,

through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
